Blog #1 My Workplace: Tuesday Oct 11th

1.What is my workplace called, and what does it do?
 My workplace is called California Marine. California marine specializes in repairing boat parts and servicing boats.

2.Is it a small business, a medium sized business, or a large corporation?
California Marine is a small business. There are 2 employees.

3.Where is my workplace located and what does it look like?
California is located on 
23286 Clawiter Rd
Hayward, CA 94545
It is a medium size warehouse that had boats all around.


4.How many people work there?  
At California there are 2 employees. Pat and Nancy
 
5.What sorts of people does my workplace employ?
My workplace is family owned and has no outside workers currently.

6.Do most of the people there have a 4-year college degree, 2-year college degree, or technical certificate?
Did not conduct interview with Pat or Nancy

7.Who does my workplace serve?
My workplace serves anyone who needs boat repairs or parts.

8.What are the strengths of my workplace? 
The strengths of my workplace is that everyone is friendly and give good advice.

9.What are the weaknesses of my workplace?
None.

1.What is my mentor’s name and job? (If I had more than 1, describe them both.)
My mentors name is Pat Sheehy. Pats job is to repair all the boats that come in and sell parts to customers that are in need of them. My other mentor would be Nancy Sheehy. She is in charge of all the paper work and filing the paperwork.

2.What is their typical day (or week) like?
1.Pats typical day                   - Open gates
           - Open warehouse doors
           - Fix or find parts for boats
           - Work on boat or boats
           - Lunch break
           - Continue working on boats
           - Close warehouse when closing time


3.How did they become interested in this field and what skills/education background did they need?
Pat worked at boat shops before he was at California Marine. He had a lot of training from previous boat related jobs.

Blog #3: My Role: Tuesday Oct 25th

1.What was my main responsibility? Did I have a title?
My main responsibility is to help my mentor Pat this the boat parts. I have to hold the engines, take apart pieces and make sure that I am helping Pat. My title is more like an assistant that helps Pat dismantle boat parts and make his job a little easier.

2.What other tasks did I complete over the 10 weeks?
In the upcoming weeks i will be working on my project which involves taking apart a engine with another intern and recycle the parts to native americans or to recycling companies. I also have to help Pat daily on his boat assignments. 

3.What was a regular day like?
A regular day so far consisted of me arriving at 9am and talking to Pat about what tasks need to be finished within the timespan before i leave. After our discussion with Pat i start working on the boat part that needs to be taken apart or be fixed. At about 12 I take my lunch break where everyone eats at the table and my mentors and I talk about the job and things relating to our project.

1.Describe what I am thinking I’ll do for my WLE project.For my WLE project i am thinking about dismantling the extra boat engines and clearing all the extra space around the warehouse to make it more accessible for my mentor.
2.How did I come up with this idea?  Explain my thinking.
I came up with this idea by talking with my mentors during lunch and asked them what would most benefit the business. My mentors needed more room and a cleaner looking warehouse.
3.Why am I excited to actually do this project for the next 3-4 weeks?
Because i know this project would benefit this business. Also this project will help me gain a better understanding on how boats run which seems interesting to me.

Today at my WLE i took apart a boat engine and separated the parts into 2 different barrels.

My mentor and i discussed the whole project process and i know what i need to get done.

    For my project thus far i accomplished dismantling one of 5 engines.

    The leadership skill that i am using the most would be collaborate productively.

    I am using this leadership skill a lot because i have to work along side my mentor to get my work done.

This leadership skill helps me because i have to be able to talk with my mentor to get things done.

The leadership skill that my mentor uses the most would be communicate powerfully because he has to explain what i have to get done.

1.What have I learned about myself (what I can do, what I like) because of this WLE experience?
I learned that i am more comfortable stepping outside my comfort zone to as for help when i am stuck throughout this WLE experience.

2.What challenges did I face during my WLE and how did I overcome, address, or learn from them?
One challenge i faced was figuring out what tools i needed to use because the nuts and bolts were all different sizes and i got confused on which one i needed.

3.What passions, values, or life lessons did I learn from this experience?
The life lessons that i learned was that its difficult to maintain a small business because you have to have make a good relationship with your costumers for them to come back.

In order to find my WLE i talked to friends and  tried working with them. When I had a possible internship i called and emailed  them to see if i can intern there.

Have a resume ready and advocate for yourself by calling and emailing for possible jobs.

3.As a result of my WLE, I think being a professional or a responsible adult in the work world means…
Following directions and advocating for yourself if you are late or made a mistake.

1.What did you do today?
Today at my internship i helped my mentor pat clean up the garage some more and made it more organized. Also i helped him repair a boat that needed s simple service to the engine. I helped Nancy also by moving some thing around in her office so she has a easier time reaching some of the binders that have paperwork in them.

2.How have you improved as an intern?
I have as an intern because i am able to step out of my comfort zone to get help when i eed it. I also check in with my mentors to make sure what im doing is right. I also improved by letting my mentors know when im going to be late or if i am coming in to make up some time.

3.What about your workplace makes it a great or not so great place to work?
My workplace is great because Pat and Nancy spend their time teaching us how everything is run. Also the lunch breaks are really interesting because we talk about life and our experiences.

    I dont really have any final thoughts about my wle. I learned a lot by working along side Pat and Nancy.

    This experience will affect my future decisions in purchasing a boat because i know have a better understanding on what i should be looking for to get a good working boat.
